Finding My Place in the Evolving World of Documentation

I’m Michelle Wright, a technical communicator, content strategist, and documentation transformation specialist.

I never planned to become a communicator. However, somewhere along the way I realised this is what I meant to do. Creativity has always been a powerful part of how I work. I gain enormous satisfaction from creating something meaningful, whether that is a strategy, a body of writing, or a piece of artwork.

Since 1996, my technical communication career has taken me across financial technology, enterprise software, developer platforms, and public-sector systems.

My career began with technical documentation, but the problems I encountered gradually became more complex.

Transforming documentation increasingly meant looking beyond individual documents to consider structure, ownership, governance, user journeys, publishing processes, and how information moved between teams. Working closely with those teams helped create clearer accountability, more reliable updates, and smoother hand-offs. That evolution shaped the way I work today.

This progression gradually shifted my focus from individual deliverables. It emphasised the systems that keep documentation useful over time.

How I Approach Documentation

Typically, I begin by understanding why a documentation problem exists before deciding how to address it. This involves information architecture, governance, workflow changes, or a different approach to maintaining knowledge.

Sometimes the answer is better content.

I favour practical, sustainable improvements that organisations can realistically adopt and maintain. Thus, this means balancing user needs with technical constraints. It also considers available capacity, organisational priorities, and the systems already in place.

In redesigning a documentation ecosystem, improving developer experience, or developing an AI-assisted workflow, my objective remains the same. I seek to create information that people can understand, trust, and sustain.

Moreover, clear information supports effective adoption. This focus guides every decision.

Ultimately, the goal is to create trusted information that remains useful over time. Clarity, consistency, and practicality guide this approach. By maintaining high standards, I support sustainable work. That commitment informs every choice I make in practice. It also reinforces our responsibility to users.

Experience Across Complex Environments

My experience spans developer and API documentation, documentation transformation, information architecture, and content strategy. My experience also covers governance and content operations across fintech, banking, SaaS, engineering, and public-sector environments.

I have worked both independently and within multidisciplinary teams and collaborated with developers, product teams, subject matter experts, support teams, implementation specialists, and senior stakeholders.
